For the price this is a great starter set. For the time to time projects I have these are all I need. There is better quality out there, but if your not going to use it heavily then this set is great.
The 1/4 straight bit broke off about 3 inches into a 1/4 deep rabbet in very soft pine THE FIRST TIME I USED IT. I haven't used the others yet, but I am not impressed so far. I used a dull Porter Cable bit I've had for years to complete my project, which included 1/4 depth rabbets in walnut. I was told by a saw blade guy that the bits sold in this kind of moderately-priced sets tend to be inferior quality, and he'd never heard of MLCS anyway. I thought he was just saying that because he didn't carry them. I'd have been really annoyed if I'd been using a bit from this set I didn't already have a backup for. I'm going to stick to Whiteside or Porter Cable bits.
I purchased a 30 piece set of MLCS router bits in a nice case back in 2003. I've had nothing but good use out of them and I am still using them today. 2 or 3 are worn and burned but should be able to be honed back into shape. MLCS puts out a catalog ever so often and has an extensive line of bits and accessories. If I need to purchase a single specialty bit, I reach for this catalog. They're as good of a deal you can get on router bits. I recommend them highly. They also make a 60 piece set if you need that much variation. My buddy bought it and there are bits in there that I don't think I would ever use.
I purchased this set a few months ago and was very pleased with this "starter set." It provides the basic bits needed for many simple projects. I built an oak bookcase for my nephew. I used the roundover, flush trim and rabbiting bits. I was pleased with the bits' smooth operation and finish. They worked as well as other name-brand bits that I have used costing two to four times as much. 5 stars for BANG for the BUCK!
If you bought a router for the first time and need to 'play' this is a great bargain. When you narrow down the ones you need you'll know which once to invest more money.
The box is great, the bits are solid. What else do you need. Buy this.
I received a Dewalt router combo kit as a gift in December, but what the giver forgot is that a router is useless without router bits. I bought this set from MLCS based partially on reviews and more on price. I had read quite a bit about how you get what you pay for when it comes to router bits and how I should buy Freud or something similar, but I really don't have that kind of money to spend and, just like whole "fine woodworking" scene, it just seemed a little pretentious to spend that kind of cash. So I bought these and I couldn't be more pleased.
The set came in a well constructed case that very firmly held all the bits in place, avoiding any potential damage in shipping. The bits were coated in an oil or grease of some kind to protect them from rust that had to be cleaned off, but I'd rather have a rust free bit and spend a little extra time cleaning. All the bits I've used so far, 1/2", 1/4", flush trim, have worked great. And for the three bits I've used, I could have easily spent as much as the entire set on three individual bits from Freud.
Because of this bit set I have started looking at MLCS first for my additional router needs. I just ordered a router table plate from then for about half of what Rockler asks for theirs. All in all, I think MLCS and this router bit set are a great value in the expensive world woodworking.
This set is really great. Each bit is extremely well made and cuts cleanly. This would be a wonderful starter set, or replacement for worn-out bits.
When I got my router, I needed some bits. Some folks think you should buy bits only as you need them, and to get top quality for each bit. That that costs about $25 per bit, and just doesn't make sense if there are more than two bits you KNOW you'll need.
So I bought this bit set and am very happy with it.
A couple words of warning:
1) The first time you pull these bits out of their plastic sleeves, use a rag. They are in there a bit tight due to the anti-corrosive goop that's on them. If you aren't very careful, you will slice your finger BUT GOOD on the carbide parts as you pull on them.
2) Clean that goop off with alcohol. I used denatured alcohol, but common isopropyl will probably work too. You don't want to chuck these in your router with that goop on the shanks, as it will gum up the collet. You want to clean it off the rest of the bit too, so the bits are in balance.
The box that is included is quite nice. It is pine, with a high quality latch and nice box joints at the corners.
Anyway, it is a nice set, and I don't think you really get better quality than this for paying more.
Used them on some small woodworking projects and they work fine. Will let u know more when i have used them extensively. For the price its still a great deal

to create interior doors. The doors are classic six panel
red oak. Over the last six months I've made 7 of these doors.
Overall, I'm very satisfied with my purchase of these bits.
These are not the only router bits for creating interior and
exterior doors. MLCS and Katana have router bits for creating
both 1 3/8 interior and 1 3/4 exterior inch thick doors. I
have not had the opportunity to use other vendors bits for
creating rail and style entry/interior doors, so I have no
opinion on them. They might, or might not be less expensive
or not as nice.
The case that these bits come in is nice, and well thought
out, even though it is a bit bulkier than needed. There is
a place in the case to store the instructions.
The instructions that accompany these router bits are
very well done, and at times a bit pedantic and overdone.
They even come with a mini-DVD that shows some of the
typical setup and use of these bits.
The instructions are clearly aimed at someone who is not
an overly qualified engineer, like me. Sitting down
with some paper, pencil, and graph paper are must before
you start creating any door. Then reread the instructions,
create your cut list allowing for proper gaps per the
instructions.
I drive this bit set with a Porter Cable 7518 3.25 HP router
with a benchdog router lift. This router has more than enough
power to push these bits. I suspect a smaller router could easily
spin these bits, but you will need something about this size if
you plan on using the larger raised panel bits. When routing
the rails, I recommend that you have a few feather boards or some
other type of hold down. I use two feather boards on top,
and two on the side; with two on the infeed and two on the
outfeed for the longer rails. When routing all the other
parts of the rails, stiles, and mullions, just the two top
feather boards are all that seems to be needed.
The first two doors came out exceptionally clean and very little
tearout. The third and fourth door showed a small amount of tearout
and one knot caused significant splintering. After dressing them
with some credit-card sized diamond sharpening stones, they
again started performing as nearly as good as new. I suppose I could
reduce the splintering and tearout if I didnt try to feed too much and
only took off an eighth of an inch at of depth at one time. But when
these guys are sharp, and the grain is straight, they make very short
and clean work out of my red oak.
To complete the doors in my house, I will be making four more doors,
and possibly two closet doors. I am very pleased with the performance
of these bits. They have performed as well as expected or better.
I have no reason to not recommend them, unless you already have a
shaper and a reasonable set of shaper knives for interior/exterior doors.
Freud is the only company I know of that makes a cope and stick bit that can be used to make a proper length tenon for passage doors. A big time saver for those not proficient in mortise and tenon joinery and only making a few doors. Make the tenon as long as possible to increase the strength and longevity of the doors.

Micrograin bits ideal for fast, smooth, accurate trim cuts with a shielded, compact ball bearing pilot.This bit was at a great price so I got it since this is one those profiles that get used often. As with other Bosch products this is well made. Carbide tips are brazed evenly. Not much else to say. I suspect that these bits are made in the same factory as Amana brand bits, as both are made in Israel. Both are excellent tools, so no complaints.

For drilling concrete, brick and masonry. ''On-Center'' diamond tip grinding for fast starts and drilling. Deep U-Flute design removes debris and increases drilling speed.This bit is a masonary bit to be used in a hammer drill. It is a good quality bit from a company that is known for quality tools, esp. when it comes to hammer drills.If you were only making a small number of small holes in masonary, say for anchors, you might be able to use a standard drill with non hammering masonary bits. But if the job calls for larger quantities or larger holes, Step up to a hammerdrill with hammer masonary bits like this one.
I have used this bit to drill through concrete block foundation walls in order to feed conduit and wires to exterior outlets. This bit when used in conjunction with a hammerdrill, made the holes needed much faster than a rotary non hammer masonary bit in a non hammer drill.
Bosch bits seem to stand up to tough use better than the B&D/Dewalt bits that I had previously used. The Shank of the bit is reduced down to fit in the chuck of a 1/2 inch hammer drill. So you cannot use this if your hammerdrill has a 3/8 inch chuck. Also, I use this bit in a Ridgid Hammerdrill that is rated for this size bit. Many other brands do not generate enough power or torque to turn this large of a bit, so check the specifications on your hammer drill before using it with this bit or you could risk damaging the tool. I would resist the temptation to try using this bit with a cordless drill for the same reason.

Designed to produce precision cuts in almost any trimming or pattern routing application with bearings above and below the cutting edge.I have the exact opposite problem, I was hoping for a ½" shank but got a quarter inch one instead with a piece of clear tubing around the shank. It will work but it is not what I expected or wanted.
Same as Christopher, I ordered the Freud 1/4 inch shank and was shipped the 1/2 shank instead.
Checked the Freud web site and they list the 50-501 as a 1/4 inch shank, but the bit in the package is marked as 1/2 inch and the bit is 1/2 inch, so it appears that Freud is the one providing the misinformation. In addition Freud list the 50-509 as the 1/2 inch version of this bit but Amazon list it as a 3/4 inch bit so that seems to be out of whack as well.
Bit looks like a nice piece of steel but also won't fit my Colt router so back it goes. If you need a 1/2 inch double bearing bit this looks like a nice one just make sure you have a 1/2 inch collet in your router!
Be careful. This item is described as having a 1/4 inch shank, and shown with that in the photo, but when I ordered it I got it with a 1/2 inch shank, which I can't use in my Colt. I returned it and customer service shipped what was supposed to be the right thing, but was the same wrong item.
It appears that they do not have this with a quarter inch shank. So if you need that, you wont' get it.
If they change the product description and correctly describe it with a half inch shank,this review will become irrelevant. My other Freud bits perform very well, so I have no reason to believe that this bit with the half inch shank won't be an excellent product for those who want that. But as to the actual item listed here, it isn't what is described, so don't buy it expecting to get it with a quarter inch shank.

Product Description
Designed with a deep center gullet for maximum material removal without clip loading. Ideal bits to use with templates for setting butt hinges. Cuts all composition materials, plywood, hardwood, and soft wood. Use on CNC and other automatic routers as wel l as hand held and table mounted portable routers.I mortised 12 doors, 3 hinges per door, plus latch plates using a gig.
This bit left a perfectly smooth groove, Still sharp as new! I would recommend Freud Bits to anyone seeking high quality tooling!

I got this set as a freebie with a Makita router a couple of years ago. At the time they were selling it for about 40 so I thought it was a nice extra with an already low priced router.
I've made several sets of doors with it. Holds the edge pretty well. Most of what I have run through it is Oak, and occasionally you get some tearout on the rails inner edge, but that is probably more due to the grain in the oak then anything with the bits themselves.
I ran some pine and some red oak through the bits just to see how they cut with different wood. The edge was as smooth as a babies bottom and feed rates were reasonable. Even when I slowed to a painful crawl, I had no problem with wood burning. They were a great deal (they came with a 3 1/4 hp router). Very happy with them
